Detroit has been ranked one of the highest cities with the happiest young professionals, according to Forbes and careerbliss.com.
According to Forbes, young professionals rated their happiness less on income and more on professional experience. In Detroit, new hires will not only undergo useful training but also boost their resumes while benefitting the city as well.
Detroit Free Press photographer Jarrad Henderson, who is originally from St. Louis, Mo., said people have been migrating to Detroit because of the energy that surrounds the city.
“There is a hope in Detroit and a sense of pride and passion,” Henderson said. “Generally, people want to be associated with things that are trying to become better and Detroit seems like it’s trying to be the best.”
Several companies have come to Detroit to profit on the rebuilding of the city.
According to Corinne Lyons, event coordinator for The Author Collective, there are countless opportunities in the city that have attracted young professionals from around the world.
“Detroit is a powerhouse for new thoughts and new ideas,” Lyons said. “People come in and really make a change. Young professionals have the energy, the drive and the knowledge to get it done.”
As a Detroit resident, Lyons said that she is excited about the recent influx of young professionals. Lyons said it is beneficial since Detroit has been plagued with numerous problems and these people want to help.
“I know that Detroit needs help, and (the city) needs more help than what Detroiters can give them,” Lyons said. “Now we have the highest illiteracy rate and DPS has a low graduation rate. Obviously we’re not producing what we need to produce, so to have young professional people come in and start to make those changes, they will be benefit the city and themselves.”
Detroit resident and real estate agent Melissa Phillips said she feels that many young professionals have been attracted to the city because of its cheap property. Phillips said that people will be able to move into the city, find a home and work without losing money.
“This is a great opportunity to invest,” Phillips said. “As a young professional, we know how important it is to invest and secure our money. As opposed to going somewhere and spending $200,000 for a condo on the water, you can come to Detroit and do that with a young professional salary and still live comfortably.”
