Big, baggy sweatpants and oversized tees with simple designs behind university names are a thing of the past. Now there is a way to get fashionable dresses, lounge pants, hoodies and cardigans with your university’s name while maintaining a sleek, fashionable appearance.
School House, the company merging fashion and school logos, is expanding to larger universities across America. Students and alumni can find collegiate apparel from Wayne State and even big east coast universities like Yale. School House, which is based in Durham, N.C., currently sells their fashions at 100 universities and in Canada. The brand has been showcased in Teen Vogue and The Wall Street Journal.
The founder and CEO of School House is Rachel Weeks. The endeavor began once Weeks became a Fulbright Scholar and went to Sri Lanka to study ethical manufacturing 2007-2008.
School House defines ethical manufacturing: “For us, it means that we do not and will not exploit our employees and partners in the process of manufacturing and distributing our product. We pay premium prices and work one-on-one with suppliers and apparel workers in our facilities to ensure everyone is paid fairly, treated equitably and instructed with integrity.”
Weeks wanted to find a way to develop a company that distributes a fair amount of wages to laborers. Her next goal soon became creating a clothing line that satisfies customers who want more options when it came to representing their universities.
Upon completing her research, Weeks was more than happy to bring School House to the U.S. this year. School House is now collaborating with a local textile company in North Carolina called Opportunity Threads.
“The School House and Opportunity Threads partnership gives a fresh face to North Carolina’s rich history in textiles and apparel manufacturing,” Weeks said.
Furthermore, the student body is ready to support School House for more than one reason.
“This company motivates me to buy stuff because of what the owner is working towards: workers’ rights. A lot of places do not care about the worker. Plus I can relate to her. I want to graduate from college and do something great too. I would definitely support this clothing line,” said WSU student Andrew Barnhill.
Other students are simply excited about the style that School House brings to representing their university.
“They have really cute clothes. They have a great style and I would wear any of those cloths in a heartbeat,” said WSU student Elizabeth Fogarty.
Ultimately, School House accommodates more than one market. They make tops, bottoms, hoodies and dresses for other organizations as well. They can have apparel made for fraternities, sororities and clubs.
