Hundreds of people crowded into Spirit of Hope Church Oct. 10 to plan the upcoming Occupy Detroit movement modeled after the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City that has caught national attention.
Event organizers estimated that about 1,000 people attended the meeting. Shortly after the 7 p.m. start time, the group moved out of the church and onto a playground next door to accommodate the overflow of people coming in.
At the meeting, Oct. 14 was set as the start date of the occupation. The group will meet at Spirit of Detroit statue in front of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center at 4 p.m. and start its march at 6 p.m. They’ll march down Woodward Avenue through the financial district to Grand Circus Park, where they will stage their protest.
Similar to Occupy Wall Street, the group will be protesting what they see as unfair social, financial and political practices that take advantage of the middle and lower class.
Occupy Wall Street has been going on since mid-September but only recently attracted mainstream media attention. People from all over the country have traveled to join the protest, which has become both a national and international movement.
Some people came with a specific social issue in mind that they want to protest.
“I am a midwife, and I would like to see women who are uninsured be able to get breast screenings and Pap smears,” said Helen Stockton of Ypsilanti. “I’m also in support of trying to reform our nation’s policy for how corporations operate and would like to see free health care for everybody in America.”
She said she first heard about the Wall Street protest, then heard talk of a similar movement in Detroit.
“I searched for it until it popped up on Facebook, basically, and then kind of just joined in,” she said.
Others came out of sheer curiosity.
“I guess I just wanted to see what was going to happen here and what the turnout would be and how it would be organized,” said Siri Gossman of Hamtramck.
Event organizer Diana Carolina said she has had experience participating in multiple protests in New York City during the spring and summer. As part of a working-class immigrant family, she has personal ties to the causes represented during Occupy Wall Street.
“I went to City College for my undergrad…and there were primarily black people, people of color, and I could see the massive attacks on public education,” she said. “But the reason why I want to participate in this specifically is (that) I think this is a real opportunity to build a broad…social movement.”
She said she was excited to be part of something where “the most oppressed sectors, their demands, their experiences and their visions are really guiding the movement.”
During the introduction inside the church, speaker Abayomi Azikiwe started a dialogue with the crowd that fired up the people.
“Are we tired of unemployment?” he asked.
“Yes!” the crowd responded.
“Are we tired of being robbed by banks?”
“Yes!”
“Are we tired of being forced out of our homes?”
“Yes!”
“Are we ready to draw the line?”
“Yes!”
“The Occupy Wall Street movement is growing. It’s developing. It’s diversifying,” Azikiwe said, “and if they can do it in New York, I know damn well we can do it in Detroit.”

Great write-up. Thank you for your objectivity.
I’m not anti-police, I’m anti-abuse of power… but the video of police violating 1st Amendment rights of the Occupy Wall St supporters is more than I can take.
Funny, how public sector workers such as police and corrections officers expect Americans to protect their job/pension/health care security from Republican/Conservative spending cuts (examples in Wisconsin and Ohio). But then the police union/association members pay us back by beating, gas, shoot with rubber bullets and wrongfully arresting Concerned Citizens demanding accountability from the Wall St con-artists who ruined our economy.
It seems the real criminals have had police and secret service protection. I’m on my way to the Wall Street Campground at 11 Wall St. to re-join my activist brothers and sisters in the Occupy Wall Street movement. The Class War has begun and the LAW better get out of the way.
Back in the late 90’s while the Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay were busy selling out the American middle class for a very few silver spoon trust fund babies… I don’t remember the public sector union workers standing up for their private sector union brothers and sisters.
This rant is for all you Johnny-come-lately’s speaking out for the working class. I’ve been part of an accountability movement since the late 90’s. The newspaper headline we used is from 4/16/99, titled: “Mattel to layoff 3,000 workers. WALL STREET CHEERED the news of restructuring, sending Mattel’s stock up nearly 16 percent…”
WHAT? We all know how IT turned out now that our children had all the latest LEAD based toys from China.
Questions one must ask: How did Wall Street become the enemy of the American working class? What did the 90’s Congress legislate to make it easy for Corporations to move jobs out of the country? Would the police of the time blame 3000 Mattel workers for being VERY angry? Because that news article was about as “in your face” as it gets… (See where Michael Moore got his “Last Word” talking points from cyberbitchslap2.blogspot.com)
Not money but LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Overwhelming Evil exists today right in front of American faces, 24/7, but you wouldn’t know IT by listening to the broadcast news media. According to the people who control our publicly owned broadcast airwaves, the most important news they have to offer is about daily life of Sarah Palin, Amanda Knox and Anthony’s Weiner.
GOD forbid we talk about the 50 MILLION Americans struggling below the poverty level… OR do an investigative report on the Corporate Crime Wave that gripped this nation during Bush/Cheney… Ask vital questions such as WHY are Conservatives leading the charge to obstructionism, voter suppression, union busting, debtor’s prison and repealing CHILD LABOR laws? (really?) These un-American mofo’s want to get rid of the POST OFFICE for GOD sake…
Maybe some info on the trust fund babies who are holding back capital, jobs, stalling technology and keeping gas prices high just to make Obama/Biden and Democrats look bad… (ask Jimmy Carter about big money working against his Administration)
I was at the event last night and really impressed by the turn out and the speakers and how well they were organized. I think it’s the most important issue of out time, losing the middle class to corporate greed. I would like to see us hit them were it hurts the most. Stop making any payments to the Banks until they start paying their fair share !! We keep talking about raising taxes but what we really are talking about is everyone paying the taxes they are supposed to instead of using loopholes to keep from paying while they (the corporations and banks) are making record profits and their CEO enormous bonus’s and middle class American’s are losing their jobs, homes and health care.
I was present last night. I was so moved by the turn out, I even found the courage to make a short speech in front of the crowd. It is amazing that we have finally woke up and decided to stand together! We are one nation, we are one people! We can make the change. We have to move foward now. We have to show the World that Detroit is united and will not be silent when faced with tyranny!
Are we really losing the middle class to “corporate greed?” Or are we losing it to our own greed (overextending ourselves on credit) and the failed economic policies of the Obama administration. We can’t “tax” our way out of a recession. We can’t “take” from some to give to others (the redistribution of wealth that liberals are so fond of). We don’t have a taxation problem. WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM. And we need to cut spending and live within our means. ALL OF US. From the government to the people. Instead of “occupying,” try doing something productive: like helping others and encouraging our representatives to institute economic policies that actually stimulate growth instead of repress it.
THis whole “occupy” movement is a sham. It is incohesive, anarchistic and an embarrassemnt to the education system in our country. Want to see what you’re planning on getting involved with? Look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3QZlp3eGMNI Ridiculous.
I am so excited about this Movement! For the past year I have wondered where is the public outcry? Why are we not protestting the real “CLASS WARFARE” perpetrated on us for years now. If we dont do this now, we will continue in silent suffering…and I ain’t going down like that! See you at the shindig!
I heard Michael Moore will be speaking/marching at the Detroit Occupy. Is this true?
Everyone has a right to voice their opinion as guaranteed by the 1st amendment. as long as its in a peaceful manner. This seems to be organized much better than I had originally thought. I’m sure there will be plenty of WSU students rallying. As most of us learn in our Poli. Sci. classes, this is one of the most effective ways of vertical accountability.

Good luck to our side. r
to follow up on comment by anonymous….Its just all so frustrating, anger provoking and depressing what corporations who apprently run the world have been doing to us all, working, middle class as well. All I can say it that ITS ABOUT time people are protesting and Using Our American Voice, like we did in 60’s and 70’s.
Emmentaler Limburgher – i don’t know where to begin.
1st, it’s obvious that the person posting the video has now idea what the term marxist means, nor the history he speaks of in the description. this is a university paper’s comment board – don’t bring that BS here where there may actually be people that understand political theory or history of class conflict.
as far as john lewis not being allowed to speak – GOOD!
the democrats or unions or other centrist groups WILL NOT CO-OPT THIS MOVEMENT!
again
the democrats or unions or other centrist groups WILL NOT CO-OPT THIS MOVEMENT!
besides – cmon – a conservative blogger crying about a civil rights movement leader & democrat not being able to speak – ironic?
Real quick, it’s DETROIT in OCTOBER. I give it 5 hours before all those kids get in their suvs and return to their parent’s houses in Grosse Pointe for a starbucks and a belly rub. 2nd point to be made, judging by the pictures it’s all hipster art kids that are 99%ers for a reason, they lack any actual skills other than being hip. No one is entilted to anything, and if you’re complaining about the current state of your life, maybe that fine arts degree just isnt working out for you, and you should of taken a math class or 8.
