The Wayne State women’s basketball team (11-11, 6-9 GLIAC) lost their second road game in a row on Feb. 4 against defending national finalist Michigan Tech University (15-5, 10-5 GLIAC), losing to the Huskies 78-65.
The Warriors didn’t have control of the boards – a rarity this season, as they were outrebounded by the huskies 34-30. Junior guard Paige Sickmiller made the only three-pointer of the game as WSU only shot 1-10 from downtown. MT also had more points from the bench and second chance points, 11-4 in comparison.
The game wasn’t always in the Huskies favor, however, as the first half of play was tight. In fact, the Warriors had the lead for most of the first half until MT tied the game 26-26 with 6:37 remaining. The score remained close and both teams were tied 36-36 at halftime.
When both teams came back to play in the second half, MT started to take control. It was a tight half until the Huskies created a five point lead, 49-44, at the 11:45 mark. After that, MT remained ahead for the rest of the game, winning by 13 points.
Much of the Huskies points can be credited to Sam Hoyt and Lindsey Lindstrom. Hoyt ended the game with 23 points, five of which were three-pointers. Lindstrom finished with 21 points and shot 90 percent from the free throw line.
Despite the Warriors’ best efforts, they could not seem to pull it together in this one. Phaebre Colbert played a remarkable game – making 77 percent of her field goals – and finishing with 23 points. Juanita Cochran remained a force down low, ending the game with 20 points and five rebounds.
The Warriors next play Northwood University Feb. 11 at the Matthaei with hopes of getting back on the winning side.
